Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on 2 October to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, Gandhi became one of the most influential leaders of India’s independence movement. He is widely remembered for promoting truth, non-violence, equality, and peaceful resistance.
Mahatma Gandhi studied law in London and later travelled to South Africa, where he experienced racial discrimination. These experiences shaped his understanding of injustice and inspired him to develop methods of peaceful protest. After returning to India in 1915, he became actively involved in the struggle against British colonial rule.
Gandhi played a significant role in mobilizing ordinary Indians through mass movements. His major contributions included:
Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–1922): Encouraged Indians to withdraw support from British institutions.
Salt March (1930): Protested British salt laws through a peaceful march from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi.
Quit India Movement (1942): Called for an end to British rule in India.
These movements helped expand public participation in the independence struggle.
Gandhi Jayanti reminds people of the importance of truth, non-violence, simplicity, and social harmony. On 2 October, the United Nations also observes the International Day of Non-Violence in recognition of Gandhi’s philosophy and its global relevance.
Schools, colleges, and public institutions organize prayer meetings, speeches, essay competitions, and cleanliness campaigns. People pay tribute at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, Gandhi’s memorial. These activities encourage younger generations to learn about his life and values.
Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti is an opportunity to understand Gandhi’s contribution to India’s independence and his lasting influence on peaceful movements worldwide. His teachings encourage people to resolve conflicts peacefully, act truthfully, and respect others.
